What is SolarGuard?

SolarGuard is HED Africa’s high-durability exterior coating. Formulated for harsh UV and coastal air, it protects substrates from weathering and grime while keeping a crisp, low-sheen aesthetic.

Good to know

  • Finish: Low-sheen / satin-matte [confirm].
  • Tools: Airless (517–521 tip @ ~1800–2200 psi), 12–20 mm nap rollers, quality brushes.
  • Maintenance: Gentle annual washdown; repair mechanical damage promptly.
  • UV & colour hold: Resists fading and chalking in high-UV regions for a longer-lasting finish.
  • Weather defence: Excellent water resistance and film flexibility for rain and thermal cycling.
  • Dirt-shedding: Smoother finish helps surfaces stay cleaner between washdowns.
  • Surface renewal: Refreshes tired substrates with a professional, uniform look.
  • Low odour / low VOC: Water-based, contractor- and occupant-friendly.

Where to use it

  • Roofs: Metal (galvanised/ZincAL), tile, fibre-cement.
  • Walls: Plastered masonry, fibre-cement cladding, sound previously painted surfaces.
  • Sectors: Residential, commercial/retail, warehousing/industrial, public facilities.
  • Coastal & high-UV zones: Added defence against salt air and intense sun.

How to Apply

  1. Check conditions: Apply at 10–35 °C; RH < 85%; substrate < 40 °C; allow 4–6 h dry weather after application.
  2. Surface prep: Pressure-wash; remove dust/chalk/lichen; treat algae/mould; dry. Spot-prime bare metal with an anti-corrosive primer; prime galvanised/aluminium as specified; stabilise friable or porous plaster/masonry with a masonry/bonding primer.
  3. Mix: Stir thoroughly; box multiple tins for colour consistency.
  4. Apply: Airless, roller, or brush. Detail laps, fasteners, and penetrations first. Apply two uniform coats; apply the second cross-directionally after recoat time. In hot/windy conditions, thin up to 5% clean water if needed.
  5. Coverage (guide): Smooth walls ~7–9 m²/L/coat; profiled roofs/textured ~5–7 m²/L/coat.
  6. Dry & recoat: Touch-dry 30–60 min @ 23 °C; recoat 2–4 h; full cure 5–7 days (conditions dependent).
  7. Clean-up: Water; dispose responsibly.
